The main reasons for conducting a nipple surgery is either due to an inverted nipple i.e. the nipple is retracted into the breast instead of protruding out, extended nipples since birth or due to breast feeding and due to large or puffy areola (the dark area surrounding the nipple). A nipple surgery is considered by women who feel self-conscious due to the above mentioned reasons.
How is the surgery conducted?
Depending on the severity of your nipple condition i.e. mild, moderate or severe, your surgeon chooses the necessary course of action. Mild condition is where the nipples are not permanently inverted while under severe condition the nipples are inverted permanently and extra care is taken to maintain the functionality of the milk ducts. The surgery is conducted under a local anaesthesia so you are conscious during the procedure but will not feel any pain. It is only a 1-2 hours procedure after which you can go home. The surgeon makes an incision at the base of the nipple and lifts the tissues below the nipple and the areola complex and stitches them together making the nipples protrude prominently.
How soon after the surgery will be able to go back to my normal routine?
You might feel sore for a couple of days after the surgery but doctors suggest that you can resume your normal routine in two days after the surgery. The swelling stays for a couple of weeks after the surgery for which you are supposed to wear a supportive or surgical bra so that the healing process is faster. And also avoid work that involves heavy lifting or rigorous activities for at least 4 to 6 weeks.

Is the scar due to surgery permanent?
Yes, the scar is permanent but it is not a matter of worry since the scar almost fades away in less than 2 years and moreover surgeons today understand that you don’t want to show the scars; so the incision is made where it is hardly visible, even when you wear revealing clothes.
Are the sutures placed to correct my nipples permanent?
No, the sutures placed during the surgery are not permanent and help in strengthening and stabilising the base of your nipple. They are dissolvable and take almost 2 weeks to dissolve.
